Downtown Norfolk seems to be growing every day. Visitors and locals alike will be heading downtown again this year for the great entertainment at Town Point Park, which has become party central for the downtown scene. A lot of the credit for the revival goes out to the outstanding work being done at Festevents. Through a unique mix of festivals, special events, concerts, movies, tall ship visits and much more, Festevents has become one of the nation's premier events marketing organizations. Since 1982, Festevents has been attracting more than two million people per year to the Virginia Waterfront. Festevents' success is that it capitalizes on Norfolk's natural appeal as an inviting waterfront city. The seven-acre Town Point Park, with its outdoor concert amphitheater on the Elizabeth River, provides an ideal venue for the festivities and musical events that run from March through December. Other sites for large and small events include Ocean View Beach Park on the Chesapeake Bay; the marina-front Waterside Outdoor Amphitheater; Nauticus, The National Maritime Center; MacArthur Center, the area's premier shopping mall; and Harbor Park, Norfolk's beautiful and critically acclaimed baseball stadium. In addition to attracting visitors to downtown Norfolk, Festevents makes annual contributions to area charities. The American Red Cross, the Norfolk SPCA, the Tidewater Literacy Council and VOLUNTEER Hampton Roads are only a few of the charitable organizations and great causes throughout Hampton Roads that benefit from Festevents' generosity. This season's calendar of events promises be one of the best ever. Harborfest, a celebration of our region's rich maritime tradition, is celebrating its 25th Anniversary. Also significant this year is the opening of the USS Wisconsin as a permanent display at Nauticus. Festevents and 94.9 The Point team up once again to bring the return of the SunCom TGIF Downtown Power Hours and Concerts at the Point with musical entertainment every Friday night in May from 5-10 p.m. in Norfolk's Town Point Park. The season will kickoff with Collective Soul on Friday, May 4. The five guys from Stockbridge, Georgia will play favorite songs from the past, as well as new ones from their latest release Blender. On May 18, Nine Days makes their Town Point Park debut. With the success of "Absolutely Story of a Girl," their first hit single, and the release of their CD The Madding Crowd, Nine Days will bring their fresh and original sound to Downtown Norfolk. The following Friday, May 25, another Town Point Park first brings Dexter Freebish. Dexter Freebish has just recently hit the charts with their single, "Leaving Town." The performer for May 11 is still to be announced. Stay tuned to 94.9 The Point for updates. Presented by SunCom and produced by Festevents, The SunCom TGIF Downtown Power Hours and Concerts at the Point are sponsored by 94.9 The Point, AL&M, Budweiser, CENiT Bank, CFE Equipment Corporation, Chrysler/Jeep, hrtide.com, Ninevolt Magazine, Norfolk Waterside Marriott and Quality Camera.
